A weather balloon containing 59.5 L of helium is released at sea level, where the atmospheric pressure is 101.3 kPa. When it gets to an altitude of 4000 m above sea level, the pressure is only 61.7 kPa. What volume will the balloon now occupy, assuming the temperature is the same?

Answer:

V2 = 97.7 L

Step-by-step explanation:

The solve this question, we need to follow the equation below

P1V1 = P2V2

V1 = 59.5L

P1 = 101.3 kPa (because 1 atm equals 101.3 kPa so this one we don't have to do anything) = 1 atm

P2 = 61.7 kPa (must be converted to atm by dividing by 101.3) = 0.609 atm

V2 = ?

P1V1 = P2V2

1 x 59.5 = 0.609 x V2

59.5 = 0.609 x V2

(Dividing both sides by 0.609 to get rid of it)

V2 = 97.7 L
