Indirect would be telling as in to say that you are explaining but not directly giving full characterization. Or in this case not giving the actual look or physical form of what you are trying to tell which in this case, means showing would be direct because you can see and it. It is being directed to the point, the actual item or physical thing. (Please correct me if I'm wrong!)
