While there are a number of contenders for the best Allied aircraft of the First World War, most aviation experts would agree that Germany's Fokker D. VII was truly its best, despite having a relatively short wartime career.The first aircraft carriers were constructed during World War I. The first time a carrier-based airplane attacked a land target was in July of 1918 near the end of the war. The planes used in WWI were much slower than the planes used today. It helped both sides of the war on the offensive aspect, becasue they could fly over a target and drop heavy artillery on the enemy with out having to enter enemy lines.
