Reservoirs can be natural or artificial (human-made). Examples of natural reservoirs include hydrocarbon reservoirs in rock formations and water reservoirs that occur behind naturally occurring dams. Artificial dams mostly involve water, such as the reservoirs behind hydroelectric dams
