Even though it failed it still raised sectional tension between the north and the south, this was one of the causes of the civil war. The very foundation of the southern economy was based on slavery, so they feared that it's abolition would result to their fall. Slave owners also feared that their own slaves would turn against them and cause riots and destruction of their property.
