the definition says that atom is the smallest particle of an element and molecule is the smallest particle of an element or a compound. So which one is the smallest particle in an element? I am confused​

a molecule is made up of two or more atoms joined together, meaning that it is larger than an atom, which is the smallest unit of matter.
for example, in water (H2O), there are three atoms, which form the molecule.
