Up until the printing press, only the upper-class citizens were able to afford books (as they were hand transposed, and thusly, extremely expensive); yet, when the printing press arrived on the scene, printers were able to mass produce quantities of pamphlets and books at a rate that allowed more of the population to be reached. This helped to spread ideas throughout the world, as the mass production meant lower costs, more demand, and higher supply.
