Answer: The panama canal serves a benefit in world trade today by being deeper and wider then it was back in the day. It can hold twice as more cargo this way, while still being super fast. It now has a third lane or channel which leads directly into the pacific ocean. Most importantly though is the fact that it can fit today's mega ships.
