When having parentheses in a math problem do they come first?

When you have parentheses in a mathematical expression, they indicate that you need to do what is inside of them first. This is actually true for any grouping symbol. You do what is grouped together first.

The parentheses themselves aren’t doing something, other than saying “Do whatever’s in me first.”
