So I have this equation after solving a question:

-a = 6
So my question is that will the minus at the position of a move to 6 turning it into -6?

Answer: any number or variable adding or subtracting when moved to the other side of the equal sign changes sign. Also you can change all the signs in both sides of the equation. so -a = 6 is the same as a = -6 or -6 = a.

-(-6)=6 because - times - equals a positive, so -6x-1=6
a=-6
