Why did the colonies come to depend on enslaved Africans?

Since Western goods were rare in Africa, and African goods were rare in the West, colonies traded things such as pots, clothes and more in return of criminals to be enslaved. The conditions in Africa were perfect to grow tobacco,cotton etc.
