Explanation:

Distribute the 2 into (x + 5) to get 2x + 10

2x + 10 = 3x + 1

Subtract 2x from the left side and the right side

(Remember, we can do anything we want to an equation just as long as we do the same thing to both sides of the equal sign)

2x - 2x + 10 = 3x - 2x + 1

10 = x + 1

Subtract 1 from both sides

10 - 1 = x + 1 - 1

9 = x
