One number is 2 less than a second number.

Twice the second number is 16 more than 4 times
the first. Find the two numbers.

Answer:

x = one number

y = second number

Where,

x = y - 3

2y = 4x - 16

Multiply the first equation by 2 and substitute the second equation into it.

2(x=y-3) : 2x = 2y - 6

2x = (4x - 16) - 6

Combine like terms

2x = 4x - 22

2x - 2x + 22 = 4x - 2x -22 + 22

22 = 2x

22/2 = 2x/2

11 = x
