These diagrams can drive you crazy. The only way you can do this question is to ASSUME that the angle that looks like it is 90 really is 90. That is a very dangerous assumption.

Solution for y

cos(y) = adjacent / hypotenuse

adjacent = 12

hypotenuse = 13

Cos(y) = 12 / 13

Cos(y) = 0.92308

y = cos-1 (0.92308)

y = 22.6

Solution for x

x does not need trig to solve.

x = 180 - 90 - 22.6
