Explanation:

8am to 9pm = 13 hours

in that time we were driving 179-23 = 156 miles.

so, our speed was 156 miles / 13 hours.

now simplify it to our standard miles/hour format :

156/13 = 12

therefore, or standardized speed was

12 miles/hour
