Why does the Equator and the South Pole have different air temperature?

Since the Equator lies across the middle of the earth, throughout the whole year it is receiving direct sunlight creating a hot atmosphere. The South Pole however only receives direct sunlight at certain times of the year therefore it has different weather types.
