Step-by-step explanation: In this poem, The Masque of Red Death, the characters are forcefully quarentining themselves to stay away from others and evade the viral sickness going around (the plague). I think that Poe was writing about his feelings of lonliness in that part, as the abbey could have been a metaphor for having to keep people out of your life for the greater good.
