Why does the ability of the President to control the nominations

for the position give the position so much influence long after the president
is out of office?

Answer: The president will nominate people who are like minded and believe in the same manner as he does, sharing the same political party and believes will enusre that his politicial policy is passed on. His influence will be felt for years to come as he will only nominate those that think as he does.
