The Hindu-Arabic numerals were invented by mathematicians in India. Perso-Arabicmathematicians called them "Hindu numerals" (where "Hindu" meant Indian). Later they came to be called "Arabic numerals" in Europe, because they were introduced to the West by Arab merchants.
