The sum of two numbers is 65. The larger number is five more than three times the smaller number. What are the numbers? (Systems of Equations)

The large one is x

The small one is y

According to given conditions,

x+y=65[Sum of two number is 65]—Equation(1)

x-23=y [Smaller number is less than 23 than larger]——Equation (2)

From equation (2) we can write,

x-y=23——-Equation(3)

Now adding equation (1) and (3) we get,

x+y+x-y=65+23

=>2x=88

=>2x/2=88/2 [Both sides are divided by 2]

=>x=44

Now putting the values in equation (2) we get,

44–23=y

=>y=21

Large, x=44 and Small, y=21
