In World War 1, Paris was held for 4 years against German advances, which made it a shock when Paris was lost unceremoniously to the Germans in 1940. Since that surrender, parisian partisans fought German oppression until its recapture in 1944. As the only Allied capital lost, it was writing on the wall for the end of the third reich.
