May be y and June be x
x+y=84
y=1/3x
Now
Put y from (2) in eq(1)
x+1/3x=84
3x+x)3=84
4x/3=84
4x=3(84)
x=3(21)
x=63
Find y
y=1/3(63)
y=21

Answer:
21 hours in May, 63 hours in June
Explanation:
Set up equations
m - May, j - June
m + j = 84
m = 1/3j
Solve by substitution, fin the value of j
1/3j + j = 84
4/3j = 84
j = 84*3/4
j = 63
Find m
m + 63 = 84
m = 84 - 63
m = 21
