In December of 1862, just weeks before Lincoln promised to deliver his speech freeing enslaved people, he offered a peace plan to Congress stating that the South could keep their enslaved people for another 40 years if they laid down their arms (weapons).

Why do you think Lincoln made this peace offering? What does this tell you about Lincoln’s morals?

Answer/Explanation:

Lincoln knows a large confect will be meaningless bloodshed of his fellow Americans. He considered the cost of loosing many lives was greater than the cost of 40 years of living enslaved people.
