Eliminate the y in the following system of equations. What is the result
when you add the two equations?

x + y = 8

5x - 3y = 24​

The given system of equations are :

x + y = 8 ....(1)

5x - 3y = 24​ .....(2)

Multiplying equation (1) by 3.

3x + 3y = 24 .....(3)

Add equation (2) from (3).

5x+3x = 24+24

8x = 48

x = 6

Put the value of x in equation (1).

6 + y = 8

y = 2

So, the value of x is 6 and that of y is 2.
