During the colonial period, the main people coming were from England Scotland as they aimed to establish British colonies in the Americas. Enslaved people from Africa also made up a lot of the population.

Ireland and Germany - Early 1800s (1800-1860)

After the U.S. gained independence, other western Europeans felt more comfortable joining the nation and so more people came from Germany and Ireland.

Italy, Russia, Poland, and China - Late 1800s (1870-1910)

Towards the late 1800s, eastern Europeans joined due to upheavals in their area. A lot of these Eastern Europeans were Jews as well.
