After Italy's unification, one of the most important goals of the new Italian government was to try to make the people feel that they all belonged to one nation. This was accomplished in various ways, including expanding education and promoting the use of the Italian language. At the time of unification, the overwhelming majority of the population could not speak standard Italian. They used local dialects instead.
