How did bombs during WWII prolong or shorten the war?

The atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki effectively ended the second world war. Japan was forced to submit and surrender to the allied powers. President Truman's intentions were to "shorten the agony of war."

However, this did start the global nuclear arms race.
