What would happen if bees did not make it back to their hive? What is the evidence?

If the bees are unable to return to the hive the hive would slowly over time begin to collapse. The reasoning for this is because if you have a job let’s say a construction site that has no workers then eventually that construction site will never be completed or maintained the same applies for the hives of bees
