If Janet has 5 yards of fabric that is 2 1/4 feet wide, and she used 1/3 of it to make one kind of curtains, and the rest to make another kind, what is the area of the fabric she used for the first kind of curtains?

Explanation:

the yards have to be converted to feet

1 yards = 3 feet

5 yards x 3 = 15 feet

Area of a rectangle = length x width

15 x 2 1/4

15 x 9/4 = 33 3/4

33 3/4 x 1/3 = 135 /12 = 11 1/4
