How much power do corporations have? How do you know?

It seems like large companies have a great amount of power, but they are actually incredibly vulnerable. They don’t put the competition out of business because of a lock on the market, a good example being cars. I assure you that the entire industry could stop existing/become artisanal which is close enough. All a consumer has to do to any company, any industry, is say “why do I need you?” and go find an alternative.
