Why do humans genetically modify organisms, especially crops that produce important food items that we rely on for nutrients?

Answer:

We genetically modify organisms to meet needs of a growing population. Crops are genetically modified to supply more food for people to eat and some of the food is transported around the world to use as cash crops.
