Islamic teachings of the equality of all believers were very appealing to Hindus of the lower castes. Over the years, numerous Hindus converted to Islam, perhaps in part to escape the caste system or live more peacefully with their conquerors, and partly because Islamic missionaries traveled around preaching their beliefs and converting people.
