The American civil war was the fight for freedom of enslaved African Americans. It was not a fight for states rights, but rather a fight for rights of human beings all over the United States. Southern states left the Union in order to be able to protect those who used human beings as property. They fought members of their own family. It was the bloodiest war in American history.
