Three times the sum of two numbers is 15. One of the numbers is 9 more than one-third of the other number.
a. How can you use a system of equations to find the two numbers?
b. What are the two numbers? Show your work.

Explanation:

one number is x, the other is y

x = 1/3y + 9

=> (1/3y + 9 + y) × 3 = 15

=> y + 27 + 3y = 15

=> 4y = 15 - 27

=> 4y = - 12

=> y = - 3

x = 1/3(- 3) + 9 = 8
