The Land Ordinance and Northwest Ordinance are important because they created ways for both new states to come into the union and provisioned the northwest territories, soon to be states like Ohio and Michigan, as states outlawing slavery. Previously there were no laws on the creation of new states, taking old colonial acts that stated the established thirteen's land ran from east to west coasts. Slavery also was abolished in some northern states at the time while others still had an extremely small population. The Northwest Ordinance was the first of many national steps to abolishing and combating slavery while the Land Ordinance was key to the United States continued growth and stability.
