It tells us that W is the amount of water in the pool at a time. It also tells us that at the start there is 9000 gallons in the pool. We also know t is the time in hours so 1 t = 1 hour.

W=9000-250t

We can substitute in what we know

The amount of water in the pool = 9000 gallons - 250 gallons times 1 hour

so that means if one hour passes 250 gallons are removed, and if 2 pass then 500 are removed showing that for every hour the pump is on 250 gallons of water are being sucked from the pool
