One of the saddest episodes in the history of racism in the United States happened during the Dread Scott v. Sanford case.

The Supreme Court gave its final verdict on March 6, 1857. The court declared that Scott had no legal right to request his freedom because in those years black slaves were not considered citizens of the United States.

This decision gave leeway to people that used slaves in the South but infuriated the northern people wh were against the institution of slavery. Of course, this decision was another step to the inevitable American Civil War.
