Explanation:

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

Substitute in the known values for a and b (the order doesn't matter):

(4.8)^2 + (7.3)^2 = c^2

multiply 4.8 times itself, 7.3 times itself:

23.04 + 53.29 = c^2

76.33 = c^2

Now find the square root of both sides of the equation (square root of c^2 = c):

8.736= c

It says round to the nearest tenth, so c = 8.7 inches
