Mastro believed that pizza would be popular in America because it was a tasty, cheap, simple food, that was ready quickly and that could feed many people, especially in the period of poverty like the Great Depression.

His initial objective was for pizza to save the Italian community in the USA from overcoming hunger during the great depression, however, he realized that pizza had the potential to conquer the whole country. In this case, he started to publicize the food that quickly became one of the most beloved in America.
