A quarter note takes only one beat. the first question is all quarter notes and has a 4/4 time so in that measure, it will only have 4 beats.
On the demonstration, write numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 under each note.
A quarter rest only takes one beat of resting in 4/4 time.
