The phenomenon occurs when the sun's rays fall on raindrops in the Earth's atmosphere and is an example of refraction, after reflection. Each color is refracted at a different angle inside the droplets (which act like small prisms), it undergoes a different deflection and so the visible white light is analyzed in the different colors that compose it.
