Why did Germany attack Verdun in 1916?

(Choose one):

1) Germany believed that if Britain suffered a big enough defeat at Verdun they would seek peace negotiations.

2) An attack at Verdun would draw American troops to the area and prevent them from being used to attack German lines in other areas.

3) Germany hoped to make a breakthrough because French defenses were weak in the Verdun area.

4) Germans believed that French pride would ensure that France would defend the position at all costs and this would allow Germany to wear down the French army to the point of collapse.
