The Zapotec civilization arose in the Oaxaca Valley around 900 B.C. Unlike the Olmec Gulf Coast, which was hot and humid, covered in swamps and jungles, and experienced severe flooding at times, the valley provided the Zapotec with fertile soil, a mild climate, and enough rainfall to support agriculture.
