Whenever he visits Belleville, Andrew has to drive 15 miles due north from home. Whenever he visits Fairfax, he has to drive 8 miles due east from home. How far apart are Belleville and Fairfax, measured in a straight line?

17 miles away

Explanation:

if you draw, you get a right angle triangle.

use pythagorean theorem

c² = a²+b²

c² = 15² + 8²

c² = 225 + 64

c= sqrt(289)

c = 17
