Why did the establishment of sugar plantations lead to the growth of slavery?

Early sugar plantation made extensive use of slaves because sugar was considered a cash crop that exhibited Economics of scale in cultivation; it was most efficiently grown a large plantations with the many workers. slaves from Africa were imported and made to work on the plantations.
