Why did Mao have to stop the cultural revolution?

Yes, and in fact he did stop the Cultural Revolution. He assigned his successor, who's background was very clean and must cater to power faction . Then he stopped to restrick the power of his militory subordinates, who opposed Cultural Revolution consistently but be loyal to him absolutely. So, when he died, the Cultural Revolution stopped fast and peacefully! And neither blame nor negative evaluation were given to him.
