Code-switching is the practice of alternating between two or more languages or varieties of language in conversation. People engage in code-switching for a variety of reasons, including to express their identity, to facilitate communication with others who speak multiple languages, and to indicate the social context in which the conversation is taking place. For example, a bilingual individual might switch between English and Spanish in a conversation with a group of friends who are also bilingual, to show solidarity with the group and make it easier for everyone to understand each other.
