The accepted length of a tool is 280 millimeters (mm). During and inspection an

engineer measured one of the tools to ensure that it fit within the allowable error
range. She measured it at 325 millimeters. What was the percentage of error,
rounded to the nearest hundredth percent?

well, the error was just 325 - 280 = 45.

now, if we take 280(origin source) to be the 100%, what is 45 off of it in percentage?

\begin{array}{ccll} amount&\%\\ \cline{1-2} 280 & 100\\ 45& x \end{array} \implies \cfrac{280}{45}~~=~~\cfrac{100}{x} \\\\\\ \cfrac{ 56 }{ 9 } ~~=~~ \cfrac{ 100 }{ x }\implies 56x=900\implies x=\cfrac{900}{56}\implies x=\cfrac{225}{14}\implies x\approx 16.07
