Conditions for people of color in the south were very harsh. Often times they worked on plantations- Huge farms where farmers used to produce mass amounts of cash crops.
One example was Harriet Tubman, who was a slave that famously escaped the fields she worked on. She braved the cruel punishments of white plantation owners, which led her to ultimate freedom.
