At the most fundamental level, matter is made up of elementary particles like quarks and leptons (the class of elementary particles which includes electrons). Quarks combine to create protons and neutrons, which then combine with electrons to create the atoms of the periodic table's elements like hydrogen, oxygen, and iron.
